Knowledge aims:

1. Students will know more about Tangshan earthquake and the destruction of earthquakes.

2. Students will have more knowledge of signs before an earthquake.

Ability aims:

1. Students will form the habit of reading in sense groups.

2. Through discussion, students’ speaking skills will be developed.

3. According to the context and sentences, students can guess the meaning of some words.

Emotional aims:

After this lesson, students will have the awareness of protecting themselves during natural disasters and respect life more than before.

Key points:

Grasp and remember the main idea and details of the passage.

Difficult point:

Improve the students’ reading and understanding ability.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Warming up:

Brainstorm.

Show two pictures about the cities of Tangshang and San Francisco, and then ask students to talk anything about the 91EXAM.orgse two cities, such as location, buildings and so on.

Step 2: Pre-reading:

Ask students two questions to predict the new passage.

Q1: What do these two cities have some in common?

Q2: What do you think will happen before an earthquake?

Step 3: While Reading

1. Global reading:

Read the whole passage quickly and find the clues of this text.

2. Detailed reading:

(1) Invite one student to read the first paragraph and the other students answer one question.

Q: What kind of signs you can find before an earthquake?

(2) Invite another student to read the next two paragraphs and other students answer other two questions.

Q1: What kind of phenomenon you can get when an earthquake is coming?

Q2: What does ‘in ruins’ mean?

(3) Ask students to read the last paragraph and explain the boldface.

Step 4: Post reading:

1. Listen to the tape and underline some useful sentences and words to express themselves. For example, ‘all hope was not lost’ or ‘slowly the city began breath again’.

2. Give students 5 minutes again and later retell this passage by the story clue, so the students’ organizing language and speaking can be trained.

3. Discuss that what kind of disasters we may meet in our life and what we should do during de disaster.

Step 5: Summary & Homework

1. Make a summary that this class we learn a new passage about Tangshan earthquake.

2. After class, write an article about life and please search some information about love after earthquakes on the internet, we will share tomorrow.
