Unit5 Nelson Mandela-a modern hero–Words and Expressions
Good morning/afternoon, everyone! I'm very glad to stand here to interpret my lesson. Today my topic is “English around the world” (listening part). I am going to introduce my lesson from the following aspects: the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching aims, teaching key points and difficult points, teaching and studying methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
Ⅰ. Analysis of the teaching material
First of all, let’s focus on the analysis of teaching material. This unit is about the qualities of great man including Elias’s story, the introduction of Nelson Mandela and other great people. The learning about language part is to teach students some useful words and expressions and it can help students apply the words and expressions into real situation.
Ⅱ. Analysis of the students
Then, I’d like to talk something about my students. They already have learned a lot of words and expression, while how to apply them is still a difficult point. Therefore, I will try my best to help them learn apply these words in specific exercises.
Ⅲ. Analysis of the teaching aims
Based on the syllabus and the analysis of teaching material and students, I set the teaching aims as follows:
Knowledge aim:
Students will have a better understanding of the meaning and usage of the new words and phrase.
Ability aims:
Students can apply these words and word formation method in their learning.
Emotional aim:
Students will enjoy cooperating with others to finish tasks.
Ⅳ. Analysis of the key and difficult points
According to the teaching aims, the key point of this lesson is to get students have a better understanding of the meaning and usage of the new words and phrase. And the difficult point is to change the form of these words according to the different situation.
Ⅴ. Analysis of teaching and studying methods
To help students achieve the teaching aims much easier, I will mainly use task-based teaching method, multimedia method and communicative teaching method, Word Formation teaching method. For students, I will encourage them to learn to cooperate with their classmates to let them become the real host of the class.
Ⅵ. Analysis of the teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up
I will ask students do the daily report in front of class. The content of the daily report is about
the story of Nelson Mandela, which can deepen students’ understanding to this great man. And then ask students to retell the story between Ella’s story, which can help students review the words and expressions they learn in the reading class.
Step 2 Exercises
In this step, students will be required to finish three exercises. The first exercise is to find the words that mean the same from the text and check their answers. After students find out these words, I will place these words and their explanations in an chaotic order and have them play a match game to consolidate words they learn. After students have remember these words, I will get students learn the words with their dictionary and discuss the new words with their partners and then invite them to report it on the blackboard and make sentences. I believe students can have a better understanding with these words in the text.
After students finish the first exercise, I will ask them some questions: The words we learn is limited and how can we produce more words on the basis of these words, guiding them to review the common suffix including er, ness, ly, ful, tive, able. Then I will encourage students to have a match .Three students are in one group. They should make more blanks like the exercises2 on the textbook .They should scan through the vocabulary list of this book and the words they have learned and then use the correct endings to form the new words. Five minutes later, they can show their performance and choose the best group.
After students finish the second exercise, I will ask them some questions: Do you want to apply these words in real situation with their right form? Now let’s see a passage with blanks. Then I will show a passage with blanks on the power point and ask students to conclude the main idea of the passage , trying to fill the blank with their own words. Then show a box with available words and ask students to have a discussion the right choices of these blanks. After students finish the blank, I will ask students to retell the story to consolidate the words they learn. The requirement is to choose at least 5 words to retell the story. By doing this, Student’s listening ability will have a great improvement.
Step 3 Summary and Homework
At the end of the class, I will invite one student to sum up what we have learned today. To make them have a deep understanding of some listening skills and English dialects, I will give them two tasks. One is to finish the using words and expressions part in workbook .The other is to find more stories about Nelson Mandela and share with us tomorrow.
