Analysis of the teaching mater ial:
The reading part is taken from senior high school English book 1 of People’s Educational Press Unit 2 English around the World, it is about different varieties and the development of modern English language. Through the study of this lesson, students will enrich their cross-cultural knowledge and better their understanding in the background story of English countries.
Analysis of the students:
Senior high school students are independent in thinking and cooperative in discussing. Most of them have a good way of learning and a strong desire of seeking knowledge. However, some of them are still diffident in speaking English and are easily to scatter their attention. All these element shall be taken into consideration when I am implementing my teaching activities.
Analysis of the teaching objectives:
Knowledge objectives:
1. Students are able to grasp the main idea of the whole passage and each separative paragraph.
2. Student will master the usage of adverbial clauses of concession and the important expressions such as “than ever before” and “come up”.
Ability objectives:
1. By using the reading strategies of skimming and scanning, students can catch the general idea and detailed information of the part within a limited time.
2. Through finishing tasks in groups, students will cultivate their ability of sharing opinions with others.
Emotional objectives:
1. Students can foster their interest and desire in learning English.
2. Students can develop their confidence in expressing themselves.
Analysis of the teaching important points and difficult points:
Important points: the usage of adverbial clauses of concession----native speakers can understand each other even if they don’t speak the same kind of English.
Difficult points: How to use different reading strategies for different reading purposes.
Analysis of the teaching approaches and study methods:
In order to realize the teaching objectives and with consideration to the actual teaching environment, the teaching methods I will take are the task-based language teaching approach and communicative teaching approach, which means I will invite the students to further their understanding of the passage by fulfilling various tasks and cooperate with their group members.
As to the study methods, I will have the students to study in a relaxed atmosphere. they will cultivate their cooperation ability through group work and pair work and they will form a good habit of independent thinking by solving problems on their own.
Analysis of the teaching aids:
A projector, some slides, a computer, movie clips, a world map
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1: Warming-up and Leading-in
After greeting the students, I will play two different movie clips to the whole class, one is Sherlock, the other one is Sherlock Holmes. These two detective movies both tell the story of Sherlock, though one is a British movie and the other is an American one. Through comparing these two movies, I will lead the class to come up with the differences between British English and American English, students are also encouraged to name more countries that speak English language.
Purpose: Movie clips can not only show different accents in a straightforward and vivid way, but attract the attention of the students. What’s more, the relaxing class atmosphere will also be fostered.
Step 2: Pre-reading
Ask students the question that why so many countries use English and invite them to look at the title and pictures to predict what the passage is about.
Purpose: during the independent thinking stage, students will recall their learned knowledge. Although not all the answers are correct, they will be more concentrated on the textbook and become more eager to read more.

Step 3: While-reading
Activity 1: Fast-reading
I will first introduce the reading tip of skimming, I will advise them to focus on the key words and sentences to gain a general understanding of the passage, they are required to find out the main idea within 3 minutes.
Purpose: the task can impart the students with the reading strategies of skimming,
hich can greatly improve their reading comprehension ability.
Activity 2: Careful reading
Students are pided into groups of 6-8, each group read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:
Q1 Why did English begin to be spoken in many other countries?
Q2 Can native speakers understand everything if they don’t speak the same kind of English? If not, can you give us some examples?
Besides, students are also required to finish the match practice below through paying attention to the time line of the last two paragraphs:
Purpose: By doing these two tasks, Ss will on one hand have a further understanding of the whole passage, on the other hand, they will also be able to use adverbial clauses of concession in their communication. They’ll also experience the sense of achievement in finishing the relative difficult tasks.
Step 4: Post-reading
Activity 1: Discussion:Students work in groups and discuss the topic: will Chinese English become one of the world Englishes?
Purpose: The reasons why I set this activity are that all the students can have their opportunities of expressing their own ideas, and by working in groups, Students will raise their cooperation awareness and appreciate the excellent thought of others.
Step 5: Summary&Homework
Summary: invite some students to retell the passage according to the given key word.
Homework: Students collect more information of English varieties and share their findings in the next class.
Purpose: As the teacher, I can check if my class have already grasped the knowledge just as I expected, and on the other aspect, students can make a self-assessment and some of them are able to gain a proud sense, what’s more, by doing homework after-c
