The discovery method is a style of teaching that allows the pupil to learn by finding out principles and relationships for him- or herself. The essence of the method is that the training designer thinks out the progression of problems the trainee is required to solve, relates this progression to the capacity of the trainees, and ensures that learning is based on intrinsic rather than extrinsic factors. In other words, the trainee does not need to rely on previous knowledge and experience, nor does he or she depend on outside assistance (that is, extrinsic factors). The learning, however, is not a random process. The trainee progresses through a series of planned steps, using the intrinsic information provided at each stage.

The best results from a discovery training techniques are achieved with middle-aged and older learners and on tasks that demand the development of concepts and understanding. The three main advantages of the method are:

1. Motivation--the adult is more motivated toward discovery learning because he or she is involved from the start and involved on his or her own terms.

2. Control--the discovery method reveals the trainee's progress and level of understanding to the instructor and enables easier control to be exercised over performance.

3. Retention--learning from experience is easier for adults than learning from words; there is no stress on memorizing, hence this sort of learning is remembered.

The main disadvantage of the discovery method is that it has to be especially designed for limited groups. A further disadvantage is that its benefits are not as evident in the short term as more conventionally based training systems. But where real understanding and retention of knowledge about the whole job are required for older trainees or people undergoing retraining, the discovery method has a lot to offer.
