China

Entered market1979

An agreement with Bank of China meant that Barclays Travellers’ Cheques became available in 1979, whilst Bank of China became the selling agents for Barclays sterling denominational cheques. Two years later, in 1981, a representative’s office was opened in Beijing. In 1986, Barclays signed an agreement with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, followed in 1993 by an agreement with the Bank of China to cover 13 main branches. A Barclays Capital office was opened in Shanghai in 2005, and in 2006, the range of investment tools offered by Barclays Capital was expanded. In 2006, the Agricultural Bank of China appointed Barclays as its partner of network banks, and China Development Bank began joint investment with Barclays in 2007. The following year, China Development Bank increased its investment within Barclays. In 2008, Barclays gained approval to acquire a 19.5% stake in New China Trust Co Limited. In 2009, a new Global Retail Banking Technology Centre was opened in Shanghai Pudong Software Park. All information is correct as of August 2015.
