The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the world’s great writers. Before   21    this question, it will be useful to introduce some   22   concepts. Conflict,  23   as opposition among  social units or inpiduals against one another, is  24  from competition, which    25   opposition among social units   26   seeking to obtain something which is   27   inadequate supply. Competitors may not know about one another, which those who   28   in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both   29   of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social unit function in the disservice of one another, opposition is   30   contrasted to cooperation, a   31   by which social units function in the service of one another. These    32    are necessary because it is important to emphasize that competition between inpiduals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited   33  , but conflict isn’t. Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable   34   of human societies.

Many authors have  35   their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best  36   remain alive. In general, however, this struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition  37  starve

to death or are  38  by other types of animals. This struggle for  39   is not similar to human war, but is like the competition of  40  for jobs, markets, and materials. The most important quality of this struggle is the competition for the necessities of life that are not enough to satisfy all.

Br azil's football season has been thrown into confusion following the arrest of a senior referee. The referee is accused of helping to arrange matches as part of an illegal betting ring(非法赌博集团).
Over several months the Brazilian police secretly recorded the phone conversations of forty-three year-old Edilson Pereira de Carvalho. The allegation is that he received instructions on how to referee First Division matches from participants in an illegal internet betting ring.
It's claimed that sometimes those instructions would come just moments before kick-off. Mr. Carvalho would then favour one team or the other, allegedly for a fee of between four and six thousand dollars per game. The official has now been questioned by the police and suspended from his duties, along with a second referee accused of fixing(不正当手段操纵) lower pision matches. On Sunday the Brazilian authorities wrote to football's world governing body, FIFA, recommending that Mr. Carvalho also be suspended as an approved international referee.
With Brazil already two thirds of the way through its football season, there's now heated debate about what the authorities should do next. The eleven games refereed by Mr. Carvalho will almost certainly have to be replayed and among claims of more widespread match fixing, the Brazilian Football Confederation has promised an independent inquiry.   Efforts by two east African countries to get more children into school have been backed by the UK government with £87million worth of funding.
The Department for International Development (DFID) announced last week that it would give £85 million to the Tanzanian government to support the country's poverty reduction strategy, which focuses on education and health. The move follows a 45% rise in the number of children attending school since 2001, when school fees were abolished.
The DFID said around 95% of children aged between seven and 13 are now enrolled in school. The number of teachers has risen by a quarter and the number of schools has increased by a fifth in the past five years. Among the challenges for the Tanzanian government now, is to ensure that children receive a good standard of education.
A further £2 million will be given to neighbouring Burundi to help build more classrooms and pay for more teachers.
Class sizes swelled this term as an extra 500,000 children enrolled in school following the abolition of primary school fees by the country's newly elected government, which is expected to restore democracy to the war-ravaged(战争毁坏的) country.
According to the DFID, there are 150 pupils to a class in some areas of the country and the Burundi government estimates that enrolment rates could double in the next school year.
The £2 million will support the Back to School programme, operated in Burundi by the United Nations' children's fund, Unicef, which aims to build 100 temporary classrooms, provide 500 schools and provide water the sanitation facilities. Fast-track training will also be made available for up to 3,000 unqualified teachers and for 1,000 former teachers returning to education.
The money is expected to help bring both countries a small step closer to meeting the UN's eight Millennium Development Goals, which were set in 2000 to eradicate(根除) poverty and improve access to education and healthcare by 2015.
44.Which of the following is the same case in both Tanzania and Burundi?

A SIMPLE eye test could predict who is likely to have a stroke in the next seven years.
A study of more than 3600 people over the age of 50 found those with a condition called retinopathy(视网膜病)were three times more likely to suffer a stroke, even if they displayed no other risk factors.
Paul Mitchell, director of the Centre for Vision Research at Westmead Millennium Institute, said about 10 per cent of people over 50 had retinopathy, diagnosed by taking high-resolution(高分辨) photographs of the retina.
"This test is a marker for stroke even for people who don't have other stroke risk factors like high blood pressure. Usually about 2 per cent of people above the age of 50 will have a stroke, but we found about 5 to 6 per cent of people who had retinopathy had a stroke within six or seven years."
Professor Mitchell said damage to the retina indicated vascular(血管) problems.
"The eye and the brain circulation are essentially identical, so by taking an image of the retina we are seeing a snapshot(快照) of what might be happening in the brain." He said the images would have to be taken by an eye specialist, rather than a GP.
Stroke is the third-largest cause of death in Australia after heart disease and cancer.
National Stroke Foundation chief executive Erin Lalor said: "About 48,000 people a year have a stroke, and within a year of having a stroke about a third of the people will die, about a third will make a complete recovery and about a third of the people will have some disability.
Professor Mitchell said further research involving 2000 stroke patients in Sydney and Melbourne had begun to determine whether retinopathy was a predictor of certain types of stroke.
"We are now continuing to work to explore the relevance(有关性质) of this work and to see how it can play a specific practical role in the future," he said.
"We're recruiting about 2000 people in Sydney and Melbourne who have had a stroke to look at how common these retinal signs are, and whether they are helpful in predicting the type of stroke."
48.We can infer from the text that “a GP” is a person who __________.
A. has a specific medical skill
B. can treat all illnesses
C.knows how to take photos
D.carries out the research
49. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Eye test can predict future stroke victims.
B. Eyes should be tested regularly to prevent stroke.
C. Stroke is the third-largest cause of death in Australia.
D. We can prevent stroke in the future.
50. According to the text, both retinopathy and high blood pressure ______.
A. can cause stroke
B. are stroke markers
C. are diagnosed by taking high-resolution photographs
D. are included in the study
51. According to the text, which of the following
haven’t yet been discovered?

A.Retinopathy suggests vascular problems.
B.In fact, the eye and the brain circulation are the same.
C.Retinopathy is a predictor of certain types of stroke.
D. About 16,000 people will die of stroke.

What's your idea of a good time? What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants?
It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals.
Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular in the UK. It began in 1970 and was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of £1 - the ticket included free milk from the farm.
Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength - in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying £112 for tickets to the three-day event. Tickets for the event sold out within three hours. Acts included veteran superstars, such as Paul McCartney and James Brown, as well as new talent, like Franz Ferdinand and Joss Stone.
Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities.
Glastonbury is not unique in using live music to raise money for global poverty. In July of this year, the Live 8 concerts were held simultaneously(同时) in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin. Superstars, such as Madonna, Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder performed in order to highlight international poverty and debt.
52.What does the author mean by “the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength”?
A. The festival has achieved continuing and growing success
B. It has taken great efforts to hold the festival.
C. The festival has brought in a large amount of money.
D. There have been thousands of fans attending the festival.
53. Which of the following is right based on the passage?
A. The Glastonbury Festival is run on a profit-making basis.
B. In the 1970 Glastonbury Festival, one could get milk from the farm without paying.
C. Both James Brown and Joss Stone are skilled and experienced superstars.
D. In the 2004 Glastonbury Festival, the tickets were in great demand despite the high price.
54. “ The Live 8” is the name of ______.
A. a band  B. a festival    C. a place    D. a series of concerts
55. What is the best title of the passage?
A. An idea to have a good time
B. Charity events around the world
C. UK summer music festivals
D. Superstars’ performances in the charity events

The government of our city lifted the ban on fireworks during the 2006 Spring Festival.
Recently, we held a meeting to discuss whether or not fireworks should be banned.
At the meeting, about 60% of us support the government's decision, saying fireworks, as an old traditional Chinese culture, is worth preserving(keeping up) and that it can add to the festival atmosphere.
But about 40 % of the people present hold the opposite opinion, arguing that fireworks might cause serious injuries and even deaths if set off carelessly and also could bring dangers to the public safety.
In order to make sure of safety, I suggest that fireworks should be set off at the fixed time and fixed places, and that too dangerous fireworks should be forbidden to be produced and set off.

The names stand for peace and unification in Chinese. The fact that we choose precious pandas as gifts for Taiwan itself illustrates that we value the unity with Taiwanese.
As is well known,Taiwan belongs to China since the ancient times. Nobody can deny the truth although it was once the colony attached to foreign countries. We firmly believe that Taiwan and the mainland will become one family some day in the near future. We will do what we can to defend the independence and territory integrated of our nation. Nothing and nobody can separate Taiwan from China.
